Trauma Therapy

Sometimes the past shows up less as a memory and more as a way of moving through the present.

You May Recognize This.....

Trauma does not have to be catastrophic to shape the present.

Trauma does not have to be catastrophic to shape the way you respond to yourself, other people, or the world around you. You may know intellectually that a situation is different now and still notice yourself responding as though the old danger is already here. You scan tone, brace for criticism, explain yourself quickly, keep the peace, go quiet, detach, overprepare, read the room, or stay several steps ahead of what might happen next.

Those responses may have been intelligent and necessary in the context where they developed. The difficulty comes when old learning takes over before you have had a chance to decide what the present actually requires. Then a current relationship, disagreement, or uncertainty can start carrying the weight of something much older.

HOW WE’LL WORK

Create more choice in the present without
minimizing what happened in the past.

RECOGNIZE WHEN THE PAST HAS ENTERED THE PRESENT

We pay attention to the real-time shift: what happens in your body, attention, thoughts, relationships, and behavior when something current activates old learning. The work begins by seeing the sequence while it is happening, not only after the fact.

STAY PRESENT WITHOUT REQUIRING YOURSELF TO BE COMPLETELY CALM

Healing is not the absence of activation. We work on increasing your ability to remain present enough to know where you are, what is actually happening now, and what you want to do — even while your nervous system is still responding strongly.

GIVE YOURSELF A DIFFERENT PRESENT-TIME EXPERIENCE

Change happens when the old response is no longer the only response available. That may mean speaking instead of disappearing, stopping the overexplaining, allowing another person to carry their own reaction, staying connected without appeasing, or leaving a situation because you choose to not because your past made the decision for you.

WE MAY BE A GOOD FIT IF…

You understand your history, but old responses still
take over before you can choose.

Let's work together

Your history matters. It does not have to make every present-day decision for you.

You do not have to prove that what happened was “bad enough.” If the past is still shaping the way you move through the present, we can start there.
